Babel.TV was a commercial project, later open-sourced, started at my former workplace. It was intended to be a unified communications / multimedia environment suitable for use on a PC and on a set-top box. The desktop borrowed heavily from the UI concepts displayed on the iPhone. After the company closed its doors, the code was transferred to the BabelTV project on SourceForge.

There's much more information on the sourceforge project page, but listed briefly its features included:

Communications:

  • Email
  • Instant Messaging
  • Document Editing

Multimedia:

  • Digital Television
  • YouTube
  • Music
  • Photos

I still briefly look in on the code from time to time - I started a version 2.0 rewrite last August, re-engineering the UI so it wasn't a deck of cards.

It does contain a python re-implementation of a client-side Myth protocol, though it has probably dated a bit by now.
