My desktop setup
My first linux desktop was RedHat 4.2, from 1997. I seem to remember it ran fvwm, but I soon moved to RedHat 5.2 and 6.0, running KDE 1.x. I spent a few years using WindowMaker as a preferred WM before moving to a more minimal setup with BlackBox, Waimea and later Openbox.
I Stayed with RedHat/Fedora until around 2008 and moved to Xubuntu and Debian.
Soon after I found XFCE, which I've pretty much stuck with since. What follows is a quick summary of my desktop apps:
- Web browser: Firefox
- Mail client: Thunderbird, alpine
- File manager: Thunar (from XFCE), Midnight Commander
- Zim Desktop Wiki (for personal notes and general reference)
- Finance: Homebank
- Photos: Shotwell
- Password management: KeepassX
- Graphics: GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, FreeCAD
- Editor: Vim or Intellij Idea
- Backups: duplicity, DAR
